Social History

I have great interest in civil rights and social history. I consider the struggle for civil rights in America to be our most important historical and contemporary subject matter. The struggle for equality is an ongoing issue that has had an effect on the U.S. for hundreds of years predating our nations founding. My studies strive to expand our understanding of the Mexican American, African American, and other marginalized groups fight for equality.

U.S. History

My educational path concentrates primarily on U.S. History from colonization to the present day. This broad span encompasses America’s founding and the Civil War into modern day legacies. I strive to explore not only traditional historical and political histories but also link the movements of social history to those more traditional narratives for a greater understanding. I find that by examining the heroism of those who persevered and were agents of change history can move away from victim narratives and look to how Americans continue to overcome issues of social inequality and misunderstanding .

European & Atlantic History

Looking at United States’ history and culture requires historical examination of Europe and the Atlantic world. The Renaissance, Reformation, and Enlightenment all helped to shape the foundation of America’s early political and religious institutions as well as cultural customs. European colonization, conflicts, history of slavery, and other key aspects are important to America's development. Examining the interactions between what some percieve as European, Atlanic, or African history with the Americas can improve our understanding America and Latin world.
